But who will win this week's Film Face Off?

Story
Transformers 3 sees Shia LaBeouf star as Sam, who is struggling to find a job despite saving the world twice.
But just as he’s settling down with new girlfriend Rosie Huntington-Whiteley the war between the Autobots and the Decepticons kicks off again and it’s time for Sam to get back to doing what he does best: saving the Earth while looking handsome.
Tom Hanks stars in as the title character in Larry Crowne, playing a middle-aged man forced to enrol in his local community college after being made redundant.
There he meets teacher Julia Roberts, with romance soon on the cards.
Winner: Seeing that Transformers has used the pretty much the same storyline three times, the winner has to be Larry Crowne

What we say
Transformers 3: A mish-mash of underwear catalogue, Which? Missile magazine, Top Gear special and a trip to Hamleys, this goes all out to punch young male buttons (frankly, girls will only point out annoying things such as: ‘How come Rosie has time to get her hair straightened mid-Decepticon onslaught?’).
But can a generation that communicates at 140 characters per Tweet really handle 154 long minutes of such incoherent drivel?
Larry Crowne: Aside from the fact there’s something deeply patronising about a multi-millionaire movie star pretending to be an average Joe recession victim, the script, which is co-written by Nia Vardalos (My Big Fat Greek Wedding), is carved from the blandest of feta.
Cult support from the likes of Mr Sulu off Star Trek proves diverting but when Cedric The Entertainer is not the most annoying thing in a movie, you have to worry.
Winner: Hardly glowing praise for either film, but Larry Crowne just edges it.

What you say
TheKingBlair (via Twitter): If you havent seen #Transformers 3 yet.. your life isnt complete yet. #Thatisall
Girarrrd (via Twitter): Transformers 3 is filled with action, nice CGI and no story. At least the robot action and that replacement for Megan Fox is nice to look at
richardroeper (via Twitter): I know "Larry Crowne" is corny but it was a welcome relief from all the sequels and the noise of summer movie season...
StudioCityCat (via Twitter): "Larry Crowne"? It's like Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts made spin-art out of their own diarrhea, and now want to charge us to see it.
Winner: Transformers 3
I've perused the release schedule between now and September and there's only one thing for it: we need a bomb. A huge and awesome flop. Here in the endless summer season, with Transformers: Dark of the Moon the most obvious offender but unlikely to be the last, what cinema is crying out for is a proper box office disaster – one whose commercial performance is so calamitously out-of-whack with its vast cost that it draws a shudder from the entire film business. Let it leave behind only a smouldering, Heaven's Gate-sized crater spelling out the words: "Must Do Better."
This isn't just nihilistic glee at the thought of one of the summer's gleaming, studio tent-poles crashing to Earth. It would, I think, be a much-deserved corrective, an eloquent raspberry to the movie industry's worst habits. In a week where hundreds of thousands went on strike, it would provide a sign that cinemagoers, too, can withdraw their cooperation when presented with films too lazy to give them human drama when CGI incontinence will do. It would use the only language studio heads understand.
Only it's not going to happen, is it? Because in fact, there seems an increasingly unbreakable connection between the giant size of a film's budget and the cash it then rakes in. If you spend it, goes the logic, they will come. Certain blockbusters seem to have been collectively judged too big to fail, whatever grisly depths are plumbed in the process. So while in theory I may have to revisit this a week from now to dab the egg from my face, it's all but impossible to imagine a situation in which the third Transformers – so blankly atrocious it could almost pass for abstract art – doesn't end up making enough money for Michael Bay to buy another 15 death rays.
It wasn't ever thus. There was a time when even the biggest films would tank, and when the smell of fear coming off the studios at the time of their release filled the air like musk. For a memory-jogger, you only need to think back as far as the 1990s and post-apocalyptic splashabout Waterworld, a film whose spiralling budget became notorious, and which did poorly enough at the box office to become an instant cautionary tale.
Oddly, the twin caveats here are that even though – or perhaps, because – it gave us the sight of Kevin Costner equipped with gills and drinking his own urine, the movie wasn't actually so awful – and that in the long run, it quietly broke even. But the episode was still traumatic enough for Hollywood to mean that when the same budgetary inflation struck the production of James Cameron's Titanic a couple of years later, the world had the scent of blood in its nostrils: the project looked set to become its own punchline, with Cameron doomed to be sent back to the piranha movies.
Cut to the "king of the world" brandishing his Oscar with the studio coffers stuffed with the profits from what would, until Avatar, be the highest grossing film in history. Since then, nothing like the same naked terror has reoccurred, executive nerves clearly soothed by so many record-breaking instalments of Pirates of the Caribbean. Now and then, clunkers still clunk – but almost always at the mid-level of corporate budgeting, and even then more than offset by however many grimly lucrative Ghost Riders or Clashes of the Titans. And in the big leagues where the price tags start at $150m, nothing is seemingly bad enough to stop people shelling out – not Troy, not 2012, not the last exhumation of Indiana Jones, not Tim Burton's synapse-frying Alice in Wonderland, not – of course – the first two Transformers. Even Terminator Salvation made money, and if that doesn't make you want to dig a hole and jump in it, what could?
Movies with spreadsheets for souls, one and all. But somehow the mere idea they might not wind up as insanely profitable now feels unthinkable. And the stakes here are genuinely high: the movies' success ensures they will continue to be made, and in the current Hollywood climate they'll be made at the direct expense of better films. Realistically, I know it's too late to stop Transformers. All I will say is that next year there's Men in Black 3. I'll leave it with you.

Lotushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15019071920009356961noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3995511415923303501.post-22021670320316856032011-06-29T20:06:00.000+01:002011-06-29T20:06:16.291+01:00Cars tipped to top this year’s Christmas wish lists - Wales News - News from @walesonlineCars tipped to top this year’s Christmas wish lists - Wales News - News from @walesonlineLotushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15019071920009356961noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3995511415923303501.post-74969052637285482072011-06-29T19:57:00.000+01:002011-06-29T19:57:04.808+01:00Shia, Rosie heat things up at 'Transformers 3' premiere

On the basis of the Super Bowl spot, it'll actually go out of its way to answer as many questions as possible. Questions like these ...

1) What happened between Transformers 2 and Transformers 3?
Fans of the Transformers franchise will remember that, after a mighty struggle at the end of the last film, the Autobots saw off the deadly threat of the Decepticons, and Shia LaBeouf went back to college. Since then, there's clearly been a downturn. Some cars are on fire, the sky is filled with smoke and cinematographer Amir Mokri has decided to adopt the palette from the last Harry Potter film, where everyone just sat around in a tent looking a bit glum for two and a half hours. Whatever happened, it can't have been too jolly.

2) How is Shia LaBeouf doing?
Not good. Look at him, all grimy and distraught. "What am I doing here?" he seems to be asking as he looks around at the bleak surroundings. "I'm probably not even going to get to simulate sexual intercourse with my girlfriend on top of the giant robot I've just befriended while some other giant robots watch, like I did in the first film. This sucks."

3) After the Autobots saved the world from global calamity in the last film, are they now allowed to parade freely through the streets, or are they still going through the rigmarole of disguising themselves as cars?
It's the last one. This is either because the Autobots are still ultimately a race of outsiders, and hiding from humans is the only way that they'll ever truly avoid persecution, or because without several interminable scenes of cars turning into robots, Michael Bay wouldn't have much of a film.

4) What about Bumblebee? How's he doing?

Not good. Look at him, all grimy and distraught. "What am I doing here?" he seems to be asking as he holds his head in his hands "I'm probably not even going to get to urinate on an uptight government official in a confusing and awkward comic interlude, like I did in the first film. This sucks."

5) If the Decepticons were defeated at the end of Transformers 2, then why does everything look so bleak?

It's hard to tell from this one screenshot, but to save time let's just say that the events from Battle: Los Angeles have repeated themselves. The exact events. It might not be true, but we'll save a lot of time and it's not like it actually matters.

6) How is Megan Fox doing?

Not good. Look at her, all immaculate and clueless. "What am I doing here?" she seems to be asking as a car explodes behind her. "I'm probably being played by a completely different actress with different coloured hair this time. My character might not even be a superfluous, broadly-drawn, offensively objectified sex object with no real purpose whatsoever, like she was in the first two films. This suc... oh, hang on, yes she is. Panic over, everyone."

7) Will you be able to tell what's actually going on in the film this time?

Doesn't look like it, no. Sorry.
Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were secret agents. The whole space race was nothing more than a cover-up for a covert mission launched by President John F. Kennedy. And there’s some weird — I mean, really weird — creatures hiding out in the former Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.

The latest ravings of Art Bell? Hardly: These are plot points in Ehren Kruger’s screenplay for “Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon,” which boldly twists conspiracy theories, science-fiction and some prime Optimus Prime escapades into a yarn that might have seemed more innovative if “X-Men: First Class” hadn’t already pulled off the same trick a few weeks ago.

Still, this installment gets some credit for trying to put a slightly different spin on a concept that’s beginning to lose its novelty value: You can only watch that canary-yellow Camaro reconstruct itself as the hulking automaton known as Bumblebee so many times before you start yawning and asking, “Really? Again?”

So it’s slightly astonishing that one of those transformations midway through “Moon” actually does grab our collective attention.
At the height of a race down a freeway, the speeding car is forced to turn into Bumblebee, leaving driver Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) tumbling through the air, seemingly destined to end up as road kill.
But in a beautifully executed slow-motion sequence, Bumblebee reassembles itself back into a vehicle in mid-flight, saving our man Sam and showing off the skill of the wizards of Industrial Light and Magic that created the film’s fantastic effects.
“Moon” has two faces. The visuals are awesome; the acting, dialogue and attempts at comedy are awful, sometimes to a painful degree (the movie is never funnier than when it tries to be serious). This far down the line, “Transformers” fans should know what to expect.
At least director Michael Bay has made a few adjustments to his usual hyperactive style of quick-cutting and wobbly camerawork, which makes “Moon” feel more like an actual movie and less like a migraine waiting to happen.
It is also one of the few live-action films that truly seems to use 3D to its advantage, unlike “Green Lantern,” “The Last Airbender,” “Clash of the Titans” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” in which the supposed enhancement made the movie look dingy or downright unwatchable.
The last hour of “Moon,” a battle royale in downtown Chicago in which the Magnificent Mile is magnificently mutilated by warring Autobots and Decepticons, and Trump Tower ends up looking like the notorious Cabrini-Green complex demonstrates the full power of the 3D format, and it’s often edge-of-the-seat exciting.
The lead-up to that lengthy ‘bot brawl is far less impressive, unfortunately. Bay’s take on shooting action may have changed, but his taste in humor has not, and “Moon” includes jokes and caricatures that would make “Ernest Goes to Camp” or “The Hottie and the Nottie” look classy by comparison.
Sam’s aggravatingly unfunny parents (Kevin Dunn and Julie White) are back, and Ken Jeong, playing a suspicious Chinese business executive, demonstrates once again that his act that seemed wacky and outrageous in the first “Hangover” has gotten very old very quickly.
While dumping the infamous Megan Fox as the series’ heroine might have seemed like a bright idea, replacing her with Rosie Huntington-Whiteley was a major miscalculation. In place of Fox’s tough, feisty Michaela (and don’t think the filmmakers pass up the chance to throw in a few nasty jabs at the long-gone character), there’s Huntington-Whiteley’s blond, vacuous and often whimpering Carly, who exists purely as something to be dragged around by the bad guys or rescued by Sam.

HandoutRosie Huntington-Whiteley plays Carly
Carly is introduced with a shot of her half-bare derriere bouncing up a flight of stairs, which may explain the often bewildered-looking Huntington-Whiteley’s casting.
She certainly doesn’t generate any heat with LaBeouf, who tries to overcompensate for his own blandness by occasionally trying to imitate Tom Cruise’s more manic moments, spitting out lines one on top of each other or straining to hit hysterical heights.
Exactly why LaBeouf has been anointed a movie star is anyone’s guess, but whatever his talents may be they don’t include sharp comic timing. As for Josh Duhamel, Frances McDormand, Patrick Dempsey and John Malkovich, they look appropriately stern, stoic or (in Dempsey and Malkovich’s cases) smarmy and they let the computer-generated stars have the right of way.
At its best, “Moon” has no difficulty delivering the adrenalin rush that disaster movies such as “The Towering Inferno,” “Twister” and the second half of “Titanic” provided, those moments in which you’re simultaneously shocked and yet secretly savoring all the destruction the filmmakers can conjure up.
Shockwave, a sinuous Decepticon that’s sort of like a mechanical version of the dreaded sand worms from “Dune,” is a tremendous creation, and the well-orchestrated war in the Windy City, complete with spiky airships and death rays that blast the flesh off humans, makes up for many of the shortcomings of the film’s first act.
If it’s all a case of spectacle over substance, why should anyone be shocked? After all, it’s basically a $200 million toy commercial, with a few car ads shoehorned in. Anyone who thinks he or she is going to find stirring drama or hard-hitting emotional truths in a “Transformers” flick at this late date must be under the influence of a Decepticon.
Lotushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15019071920009356961noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3995511415923303501.post-13735580882861233642011-06-28T16:33:00.000+01:002011-06-28T16:33:07.038+01:00Film review: Transformers 3: Dark of the moon

Set your senses to 'stun' mode, as Shia returns to save the Earth, blow things up, get the hot new girl and race to the moon. The latest film in the Transformers series has Shia LaBeouf return as Sam Witwicky, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley replace Megan Fox as primary love interest, Carly Spencer.

The opening lines of Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon resonate with me throughout the movie:
"We were once a peaceful race of intelligent mechanical beings".
Michael Bay was once a good director of talented cast members.
The latest film in the Transformers series has Shia LaBeouf return as Sam Witwicky, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley replace Megan Fox as primary love interest, Carly Spencer.
When a mystifying event from Earth's past hits up the planet in present day it threatens to bring war that the Transformers alone cannot promise to win.
The movie shifts from the early 60s to present day rather nicely.

Space race
Bay's 60s prologue features Kennedy in the White House, with the suggestion that the space race between the USA and USSR kicked off when both countries detected an unknown vessel that had crashed on the moon. From then on, anticipation builds in present day until full on mayhem ensues.

Action
For action lovers, the third in Michael Bay's series of sci-fi epics does not disappoint.
The Autobots and the Decepticons have some marvellous on screen battles which are enhanced in 3D, there's a spine-tingling action sequence in Chicago which lasts a full hour and the finale is an impressive mix of physical staging, live-action stunt work, location shooting and visual effects.
The sound track is equally promising, if a little Inception-esque, but that's hardly surprising seeing as the score was composed by musical extraordinaire Hans Zimmer.
Along with Zimmer's trademark harmonies, the action scenes are complimented with songs from Linkin Park, Paramore, My Chemical Romance and Staind.
It is the acting ability which fails to transform itself on the big screen. Replacing Fox with a model was a risk which didn't pay off for Bay.
Huntington-Whiteley comes straight from a Victoria's Secret runway - and it shows. Sadly her role incorporates a little more than standing around modelling the latest fashions. Passion and chemistry are forced and faux, so much so that LaBeouf's acting suffers as a result.
Patrick Dempsey is an unconvincing villain, but perhaps that's a little more to do with me unable to associate him with any character aside from McDreamy.
Grey's Anatomy fans beware - you won't be swooning over him in this.
The film is saved by moments of brief comedy, whether it be Witwicky's incessant wailing or Ken Jeong's role as Jerry Wang. Although strikingly similar to his character Chow in The Hangover series, Jeong is more than capable of providing a few chuckles.
Action thrillers will not be let down by this jam-packed film, but those seeking something with a little more substance should look elsewhere.
Lotushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15019071920009356961noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3995511415923303501.post-65556304501884945972011-06-26T19:47:00.002+01:002011-06-26T19:47:48.047+01:00Full cast and crew for Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011)

Will the story make more sense this time?

We learned the official title of the third Transformers movie, Transformers: The Dark of the Moon, earlier this month. Now we have a bit more information about just what the plot of the film will be.
Amazon has posted a description of the Transformers 3 Push-Pops Board Book (it’s for the kids) and it contains a brief synopsis that seems to fit we what we already know about the threequel. Sort of.

eports that the third Transformers movie would reveal that the alien robots played a role in the Cold War space race between the Soviet Union and the U.S. began to surface last June. A leaked description of the opening scene for Transformers 3 lent further support to this idea – as does the film’s subtitle, of course. The tie-in book synopsis suggests that the Autobots and Decepticons will be engaging in space-set warfare in the film, but not necessarily only in flashbacks to the 20th century. Read on for the Transformers: The Dark of the Moon book description and see what we mean:

“The Autobots Bumblebee, Ratchet, Ironhide and Sideswipe led by Optimus Prime, are back in action, taking on the evil Decepticons, who are determined to avenge their defeat in 2009’s ‘Transformers Revenge of the Fallen’. In this new movie, the Autobots and Decepticons become involved in a perilous space race between the U.S. and Russia, and once again human Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) has to come to the aid of his robot friends. There’s new characters too, including a new villain in the form of Shockwave, a longtime ‘Transformers’ character who rules Cybertron while the Autobots and Decepticons battle it out on Earth.”

So – there will be a modern-day space race between Russia and the U.S.? Michael Bay does know that the Cold War ended a while ago, right?

The most deadly member of the Decepticons, revealed at last.

The story for Transformers 3 does have promise and it’s been comforting to hear both LaBeouf and Bay finally admit that Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen was, well, not very good. Production on the third giant robots flick didn’t exactly get off to a stellar start, what with Megan Fox getting the boot and Victoria’s Secret model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley being brought onboard, but Bay has assembled an otherwise solid (human) supporting cast for the film.

There’s no doubt that the third Transformers will be a box office hit – we’re all just hoping that it features a coherent story to go along with the CG robots wreaking havoc. A trailer for the film should be on the horizon soon and will hopefully help us maintain our semi-optimistic outlook for now.

Transformers: The Dark of the Moon arrives in 2D and 3D theaters in the U.S. on July 1st, 2011.

Lotushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15019071920009356961noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3995511415923303501.post-73638628797657829502011-06-23T16:35:00.000+01:002011-06-23T16:35:09.113+01:00Spielberg flung Fox from Transformers 3
Michael Bay is hardly anything like Hitler, OK?

Executive producer Steven Spielberg demanded Megan Fox be sacked from the third Transformers movie after she compared director Michael Bay to Hitler.
Fox exited the project last year, prompting speculation as to whether she jumped or was pushed. Despite denials by the actress, the word on the street was that she was given her marching orders after saying this of Bay in Wonderland Magazine: "He's like Napoleon and he wants to create this insane, infamous mad-man reputation. He wants to be like Hitler on his sets, and he is."
Bay has now confirmed Spielberg didn't much like the analogy. He said: "You know the Hitler thing. Steven said, fire her right now."
Smushy-faced Brit model Rosie Huntingdon-Whitley replaced the disgraced Fox, and Spielberg apparently wasn't the only one glad to see the back of her. According to the Daily Mail, a Transformers crew member posted an open letter on Bay's website which explained:
"Michael found this shy, inexperienced girl, plucked her out of total obscurity thus giving her the biggest shot of any young actresses' life. He told everyone around to just trust him on his choice. He granted her the starring role in Transformers, a franchise that forever changed her life; she became one of the most googled and oogled [sic] women on earth.
"She was famous! She was the next Angelina Jolie, hooray! Wait a minute, two of us worked with Angelina – second thought – she's no Angelina. You see, Angelina is a professional. We know this quite intimately because we've had the tedious experience of working with the dumb-as-a-rock Megan Fox on both Transformers movies."

Angelina, this is Megan. Got a copy of Acting for Dummies you could lend me?

Down at Michael Bay's blog, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and fellow Transformers newcomer Patrick Dempsey appear keen to stay on the right side of Spielberg and dismiss Fox's Hitlerian claims. Huntington-Whiteley describes the director as a "laugh", while Dempsey diplomatically offers: "He wants what he wants and you have to be on it. That's how he works. I loved working with him. I didn't have any problems with him and I don't think [Rosie] did either. He's demanding. He's fun, though. Look at the outcome. He's phenomenal. He's a great filmmaker."
Transformers: Dark Of The Moon will open in 3D and IMAX cinemas across the US on 28 June. Paramount Pictures vice chairman, Rob Moore, is confident the movie will avoid a basketful of Razzies, and enthused: "Michael Bay has created an incredibly engaging and immersive 3D experience with this latest movie, one that will undoubtedly be among the most entertaining movie going experiences of the summer."

First clip from Transformers 3

James Cameron and Michael Bay have many things in common. They are both dynamic, powerful and (in some respects) controversial filmmakers. They both have reputations as exacting taskmasters who will accept nothing less than as perfect a product (meaning as close to their desired vision) as is possible to achieve. They are also the men behind two of the top grossing films in Paramount Pictures history, Titanic and Transformers 2. Of course, Cameron’s other film, Avatar, hails as the top grossing film of all time…ever…anywhere in the known Universe.

Last night, we had the opportunity to attend a special event in Hollywood at which nearly fifteen minutes of footage from Transformers 3 was screened. Both Cameron and Bay were present at the event, and the two men engaged in a moderated conversation about 3D, and the use of 3D in Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Bay (who was under some amount of pressure to do so) was initially resistant to shooting the third instillation in his Transformers franchise in 3D. A conversation (or a few conversations) with James Cameron, however, helped to persuade him that his film was uniquely suited to 3D

Bay is a self-proclaimed lover of “old-school” movie-making. The director extols the virtues of 35 mm film, prime lenses, and the tactile nature of classical filmmaking. “3D isn’t like that” Bay told audiences, “It’s all 1′s and o’s.” Meaning that the bulk of the decisions that are made that will effect the final look of the film exist in a digital reality.

When Bay visited the set of Avatar, he recalls Cameron telling him enthusiastically “Weta has some great algorithms!” To which Bay responded, “What the f*** is he talking about?”

According to Bay, Cameron eventually convinced him to give 3D a go when he said, “Michael we’ve done everything. You’ve got to look at this as a new toy, another fun tool to use to create the experience.” Bay quipped that Cameron had “sunk the Titanic” and as such could rightfully say he had done everything, whereas Bay himself still had a few things left to do.

Despite his initial resistance, Bay was convinced that the technology made (and makes) sense for Transformers 3. The two men did seem to have some differences of opinion, but both agree that a high-octane, visceral blockbuster summer thrill-ride like Dark of the Moon absolutely lends itself to the medium. This reporter has to agree with that assessment. Bay warned the audience before the footage was screened that some of the shots were not finalized, and some of the 3D elements were not fully in place (as there is a mix of native 3D and post-converted 3D in the film). The 3D that we were able to see, however, did in fact work to support the footage as an immersive, crystal-meth-level-intensity action film.

Transformers 3 Trailer 2

We will have more on the conversation, including footage from the event, this coming Friday. In the interim, we offer some insight on the nearly fifteen minutes of 3D footage we were able to view from Transformers 3, which included (roughly) five minutes of the film’s opening and a ten-minute montage of additional scenes.

Yesterday we were able to bring you the first clip from the film, which introduces Carly (Rosie Huntington-Whiteley), Sam Witwicky’s (Shia LaBeouf’s) new love-interest. We hadn’t seen much from Carly in the previous trailers, and the clip really only offers a flavor of what she will bring to the film, but does give a sense of a more high-brow lover than Megan Fox’s Mikaela Banes.

Carly made a minimal appearance in the footage screened last night (essentially the same shots we had seen in the trailers). What we did see, however, was the entire moon-landing sequence – including a bit of background on the cargo that crashed on the moon in the midst of the war between the Autobots and Decepticons. We also got a look at a mix of archival and (what must have been) performance capture footage depicting JFK.Lotushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15019071920009356961noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3995511415923303501.post-20556293225777472572011-06-23T08:54:00.002+01:002011-06-23T08:54:43.402+01:00Transformers 3: Trailor

Our own Roth Cornet covered the LA preview of Transformers: Dark of the Moon, in which fifteen minutes of 3D footage from the film was screened for select press. Today that footage made its way across to the Eastern shores of NYC, where I was finally able to get a look at Transformers 3 myself.
The short version of my report: Michael Bay has created the best 3D movie experience since Avatar - and may have even surpassed it.

As with the LA event, the footage screened at the NYC event included the first 5 minutes of Dark of the Moon, followed by a montage of footage and extended sequences from the film, all of them action scenes (little to no plot was revealed). The LA event featured a panel with Michael Bay and James Cameron talking 3D in cinema, and even though the pair of famed directors weren’t available for the NYC event, footage of their conversation was included in our screening. You can check out what they had to say by going HERE.
Onto the footage: Roth Cornet broke down everything in detail in her own report (check it out HERE), so I’ll just do a quick synopsis:
The beginning of the film ties the Cold War space race directly to a mysterious event that occurred in the war on Cybertron between the Autobots and Decepticons. After that, we saw several short flashes of Transformers new and old in action, a few chase sequences, plenty of battle scenes in downtown Chicago – and of course, the base jumping stunt sequence that Michael Bay filmed with live actors, one of whom wore a 3D camera on his head while jumping.
Needless to say, Transformers 3 is going to have a lot of sick summer action. But is it worth a 3D ticket price?
Short answer: You don’t want to see this movie any other way.

Shia LaBeouf in one dizzying 3D sequence from 'Transformers 3'

If you don’t know, James Cameron lobbied Micahel Bay to use 3D in this film, even when Bay himself wasn’t convinced. After deciding to go 3D, Bay used Cameron’s 3D team from Avatar to film Transformers 3, and that team – which had already created one revolutionary success – pushed the boundaries of 3D filming even further, resulting in new rigs and camera designs to create that one-of-a-kind Michael Bay brand of action.
But technical innovations aside, how does the 3D in Transformers: Dark of the Moon actually look?
In a word: Incredible.
Personally speaking, there’s little that I see in film these days that gives me goosebumps. There’s a lot that I enjoy (naturally), but there’s little that gives me actual goosebumps. Without spoiling a thing, there were 3D sequences in the preview that had me shooting right past goosebumps into ‘OMG’ territory. Some of what Michael Bay has constructed is just…impressive. His ambitious and often aggressive style for capturing action in motion maybe the perfect marriage for the 3D medium. The results of his innovative work are also proof (as a friend from UGO said on the way out of the screening) that ‘If you don’t shoot in 3D, you shouldn’t even bother.’ All these post-converted 3D films coming out this summer (Thor, Captain America) are likely going to look cheap by comparison.
The best part about it all is that the 3D technology Bay is employing brings the Transformers themselves to life in a way that none of his other films did. One of my first reactions after taking off the glasses was to say to myself, “Every one of these films should’ve looked like this.” The most common complaints about the Transformers movies’ visual effects (what few there were) included mention of the fact that the individual robots were hard to make out or distinguish, and that the CGI characters sometimes looked too fake when juxtaposed with their human counterparts. 3D, I am happy to report, eradicates most of these problems.

Optimus Prime takes flight in 3D

The effects in Dark of the Moon will be even more polished by the time the film hits theaters – but even now I can tell you that the 3D adds those elements of physical presence and weight that were missing from the earlier installments. It actually feels like there are giant robots moving around the screen, and they blend with the real humans and environments better than ever before. The 3D filming style also allows all the minute physical details of the robots – which Bay and the effects gurus at Industrial Light & Magic have pained over for years now – to literally standout and be noticed, helping to distinguish each and every robot (even the generic henchmen) in all their moving parts. They actually feel like real characters, and that is a much-needed improvement.
Now, some may want to say that I only saw a very small unfinished portion of the film, and therefore my praise is premature. Let me be clear: all I am saying is that visually and technically, Michael Bay has made something awesome with Transformers 3 - I cannot imagine any summer moviegoer walking away from this film complaining that they didn’t get the blockbuster experience they paid for. Back in 2009, I also attended a 15-minute 3D preview of Avatar and walked away stating that Cameron had created a revolutionary experience that would become a phenomenon. I simply know what I see when I see it.
With this film I see that we’ve been given one more gem of an example of why 3D can be almost magical when used by proper craftsman – and even a preview of Michael Bay’s next career phase, if he chooses to pursue it further.
But will Transformers 3 have a better story, or better acting, or better humor than disappointing previous installment? I can’t speak to that, but Bay himself has promised the script will be better, the film more serious – and the cast features some pretty notable actors, both comedic and dramatic. Take all that how you will.
If you’re planning to see Transformers: Dark of the Moon then for sure see it in 3D – I would even go so far to say 3D IMAX. It will definitely be worth the ticket price. The movie has been pushed up and will now be in theaters on June 29th.
As detailed in the New York Times Wednesday, Bay has been “chatting up” reporters and bloggers in recent weeks, explaining to them how he focused on the 3D technology for “Transformers: Dark of the Moon.”
Last month, as the Times noted, at a Paramount-sponsored event, Bay appeared alongside the most acclaimed of all 3D filmmakers, James Cameron, to further extol the virtues of the format.
Bay has also contacted the heads of the major theater chains, urging them to crank up the projection light when they present “Transformers 3.” (One of the key criticisms of the format so far is that 3D projection has been too dark. But turning up the brightness burns out expensive projection bulbs faster.)
According to the Times, Bay spent an additional $30 million meticulously filming “Dark of the Moon” in 3D, bringing the film’s production nut to $195 million (which actually isn’t all that unreasonable for a big studio tentpole franchise).
“If this was having my name on it, I was determined to make it technically perfect,” Bay told the paper. “We’ve spent an enormous amount of time making sure the eye is transitioned from shot to shot.”
Speaking of shots, the 3D market could certainly use one in the arm from a film carefully crafted with the format in mind, as the very well-received “Avatar” was.
While Cameron’s 3D epic grossed 85 percent of its revenue from exhibition in the format, the most recent film released in 3D, Warner’s “Green Lantern,” grossed only 45 percent of its opening revenue from the format. Other recent debuts, including Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” (about 47 percent, including IMAX runs) have also performed softly in 3D.
Lotushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15019071920009356961noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3995511415923303501.post-30299073470339163122011-06-18T16:06:00.000+01:002011-06-18T16:06:25.560+01:00Which Transformers will appear in transformers 3: NEW DECEPTICONS
Shockwave - The Decepticon scientist and the movies main villain that turns into a Cybertronian Tank. Though Shockwave did not appear in the last movie, he is briefly seen on the front page of a newspaper that is hanging from the pipe in the scene where Devastator is trying to suck up the twins. At some point during 2009, Shockwave was caught on film and the event was written up for a newspaper article. A newspaper page with the headline "Mysterious Robot Spotted" was discarded in Egypt, where it was sucked up by a rampaging Devastator. Shockwave has been imprisoned underneath Chernobyl for years and is now seeking revenge from his captors and enemies.
